Core 1: Godly Values

Devotional – Honor Parents

Opening

  • Today we learned what values are, now let’s see what the bible says about what God values.
  • Read, or someone read the Teaching verse. FYI: The memory verse is further down

Ephesians 6:2 Honor your father and mother (which is the first commandment with a promise), so that it may turn out well for you, and that you may live long on the earth.

Devotional

Big picture God commands you to honor your parents

  • Q: Why is it important to give honor to our fathers and mothers? give some helpful reasons if needed
  • Today’s teaching verse says another important reason to honor our parents: so it will go well with us.
  • You see, if you give honor, then you get God’s promise of a long life filled with goodness. That seems like a good return on something so simple and easy to do as giving your parents the honor they deserve!
  • And, did you know honoring your parents is one of the 10 Commandments? So, it’s important to God.
  • The words “honor your father and mother” appear many times in the bible. When someone says things over and over again it’s probably pretty important, and we should listen, especially in the Bible!
  • Your parents are sacred to God, and have great value, worth and dignity and should receive your respect.
  • They are uniquely made in God’s image and likeness, just as you are, too!
  • God planned for them to be your parents before the world began. He knew what your family would be, your brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles, and grandparents. All these things God knew.
  • God placed you in your family for a reason. God’s ways are higher than our ways. He is omniscient.
  • Honoring your parents doesn’t stop when you grow-up, either. Even when you are an adult, you should honor your parents. (Give examples to the boys of your honoring your own parents)
  • The Bible book of Proverbs is full of wisdom for boys like yourself. You should read it sometime. Immediately in Proverbs Chapters 1 & 2, God tells us to be Attentive and be Obedient to our parents.
  • You must listen to your parents to be attentive to them, and then you must do what they say obediently.
  • Listening and then doing what you heard. That is what honoring your parents is all about.
  • Make it a priority to honor your parents daily by doing the things we discussed. You’ll be glad you did!

Memory Verse #3

Ask if anybody knows it yet and can say it? Read it together 2X Consider having a memory verse pamphlet for kids take home.

John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

Topical Questions

  1. How many Commandments are there in the Bible?
  2. What number (1-10) is the Commandment to honor your father and mother? (#5)
  3. Why does the teaching verse Ephesians say Commandment 5 is the first commandment with a promise?
  4. If honoring parents is so important, why do Commandments 1-4 say to honor God first?

Closing Prayer

Dear Father God, we thank You for our parents. They are a blessing to us all. And, some children do not have parents, so help us to be extra thankful for the parents we have, every day. And, help remind us to be thankful for our grandparents, brothers and sisters and our entire family. We have so much to be thankful for. We pray for strength and courage for these boys to continue to Walk Worthy on their journey to manhood. We pray these praises and requests in Your name, Jesus Christ. Amen!
