What are the age cut-offs?

Our “standard” placement is by the age as of August 31:

  • Age 5 or 6, Fox
  • Age 7 or 8, Hawk
  • Age 9 or 10, Mountain Lion
  • Age 11, 12, or 13, Navigator
  • Age 14, 15, 16, or 17, Adventurer

Parents have the option to place in those units if the age range is obtained by October 31 or maintained on June 30.

Foxes being 5 by October 31 is a hard deadline. In most cases, the committee will waive the requirement for someone who otherwise misses a cut-off by one or two months.

How often does the troop camp?

Our troop offers at least two camping experience for elementary boys each year, and as many as four for upper elementary. At the middle and high school levels, we have approximately 10-11 camping experiences in a typical year. It is not essential that all members attend every event.

What is available for girls?

Troop NC-613 is a ministry for boys. At Shepherd’s, we have a complementary ministry for girls, Shepherd’s Girls. Shepherd’s Girls also meets in the Children’s Center wing on Mondays, allowing for a whole-family experience. Most of our events and programming is separate during the year, targeted to the partial needs of boys or girls and the programmatic material of each ministry. However, we do have a few joint events throughout the year that embrace the family nature of these two ministries. Families interested in Shepherd’s Girls should make inquiry to that ministry so that information can be provided and a visit arranged.

What is a typical meeting like?

Regular meetings are at The Shepherd’s Church on Monday evenings. The troop assembles at 6:30 PM briefly for an opening flag ceremony and announcements, and then dismisses to the smaller groups.

Elementary (Woodlands Trail) meets until 7:45 PM. They follow a curriculum through seven branch frontiers, with most lessons including instruction, hands-on activities, and a game. Each night there is also a fifteen minute devotional.

Mid/High (Navigator/Adventurer) meets until 8:00 PM. Sometime this group stays together, and sometimes splits up. Their activities include badgework and bible study, planning upcoming events, and engaging in leadership activities.
