Core 6: Manners

Devotional – Manners

Opening

  • We learned today the importance of using manners, now let’s see what God says about manners.
  • Read, or someone read the Teaching verse. FYI: The memory verse is further down

Luke 6:31 Do to others as you would have them do to you.

Devotional

Big picture Treat others as you want to be treated. Be an encourager, a helper, and a good friend.

  • Q: What are some reasons you may find it hard to treat others as you want to be treated?
  • We all like to be given encouraging words, right? And, the Bible is filled with encouragement. Jesus encouraged all those who needed it (e.g. disciples, those He healed, the poor, water into wine).
  • So, be an encourager of others! That means always looking for opportunities to give others words of encouragement or prayers. And, by others we mean anyone and everyone.
  • You can encourage anyone, even those older than you, especially if God is giving you words to say.
  • Don’t be afraid to speak but think before you speak to make sure your words are pure and encouraging.
  • Make it a habit to look for the good in others not the bad and to ask God what that person may need to hear at any given moment, especially during troubled times or when they ask for prayers.
  • And, treat others as you want to be treated by being a helper of others.
  • Helping others shows Honor and love others by helping them.
  • Q: Did you know love is an action not a feeling? The Bible mentions love over 500 times, that’s a lot of loving actions.
  • But, to love others you must be patient, kind, courteous, selfless and good-natured.
  • Using manners includes all 5 of those loving qualities. Think about it. Manners takes patience and selflessness to put others first, and manners are definitely kind and courteous actions. And, have you ever seen anyone using manners who is not good-natured (joyful)?
  • Lastly, treat others as you want to be treated by being a good friend.
  • Jesus was a good friend to many people including tax collectors like Zacchaeus, and He was kind even to those who were His enemies (pharisees).
  • It’s the least we can do as Christians to show Jesus how much we love Him by being an encourager, a helper, and a good friend.

Memory Verse #1

Ask if anybody knows it yet and can say it? Read it together 2X Consider having a memory verse pamphlet for kids take home.

Ephesians 6:13 Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm.

Topical Questions

  1. Do you see how using manners and how loving others is so closely related to each other?

  2. How is being a good friend showing good manners?
It puts others first and is kind

  3. When was a time that you found it difficult to be an encourager to someone else?

Closing Prayer

Father God, teach us to trust You with all our heart and to lean not on our own understanding, even when it is hard, like using good manners. For we know this verse comes with a promise that if we just trust You by following Your lead, that You will always take care of us by making our paths straight. Thank You for loving us that much. In Your name, Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen!
