Core 4: Personal Safety

Devotional – Carefulness

Opening

  • We learned today every home has dangers in it if we are not careful, let’s see what God says about it.
  • Read, or someone read the Teaching verse. FYI: The memory verse is further down

Proverbs 3:21-23 My son, preserve sound judgment and discernment, do not let them out of your sight; they will be life for you, an ornament to grace your neck. Then you will go in safety…

Devotional

Big picture God’s wisdom keeps us safe. He has a plan.

  • Introductory Questions
    • Q: Are you a messy person or are do you like things neat and put-away?
    • Q: At home, are you responsible for putting things away, if so, what things are you responsible for?
    • Q: Is it harder to pick up your own stuff or someone else’s stuff? You need to help your siblings keep your house neat. A neat home is a safer home, it helps your parents, and it teaches you discipline to be a better person.
  • Setting a good example of neatness for your siblings is a wise choice.
  • Obeying your parents is a very wise and helpful thing to do, and it is God’s plan for all children.
  • The teaching verse reminds children to be wise, and it also reminds you wisdom comes with a promise. That promise is that you will be safe, and life will go well for you if you do what God commands.
  • I am sure you all are old enough and wise enough to stay away from the dangers we discussed today around your house. But…do you have younger siblings in your house that may need protecting?
  • You need to keep alert to dangers in your house and let someone know if you spot dangerous things!
  • You are responsible for not only yourself, but to help others to protect them, too, if you can. And you CAN because we taught you today to spot dangers inside & outside your home.
  • The teaching verse says to be wisely observant, to look out for danger before it harms you or others. God has a plan. He wants you to trust Him with all your life. If you obey Him, He will protect you. But you need to learn to be wise. To use your brain and your discipline to help God, help you.
  • We discussed how to survey your home for dangers. How to be on the lookout for harmful things and to let someone know if you spot danger long before it becomes a problem. That is wisdom!
  • And as a loving member of your family, we discussed the importance helping keep your home neat.
  • Personal safety goes beyond just your person. God and your parents look after you. So, you can and should give back just a little and it will mean so much.
  • Now here’s our memory verse. See how amazingly it ties in with everything we discussed today!

Memory Verse #1

Ask if anybody knows it yet and can say it? Read it together 2X Consider having a memory verse pamphlet for kids take home.

Psalm 27:1 The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid?

Topical Questions

  1. What does the teaching verse mean by “not letting out of your sight sound judgement and discernment?”

  2. What does the teaching verse mean by “sound judgement and discernment will be life for you?”

  3. What does it mean by “sound judgement and discernment are an ornament around your neck?”

  4. The teaching verse says, “your foot will not stumble.” This means more than tripping & falling, right?

Closing Prayer

Dear Jesus, Lord, we thank you so much that you have a plan for us. That you care so much for us that you have numbered every hair on our head. Your plans for us give us life. They keep us safe. They bless us every day and in every way. Help us to be wise. Help these boys to pick up their toys. To obey. To plan ahead. To be careful. To trust You even when it is scary. In your name, Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen
