Elective 3: Hobbies Elective

Devotional – Doing Your Best

Opening

  • Hobbies are fun, now let’s see what the bible says about the best way to have fun.
  • Read, or someone read the Teaching verse. FYI: The memory verse is further down

1 Corinthians 10:31 So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.

Devotional

Big picture We should spend our time on things that glorify God.

  • Q: In your family, is there something that you are the very best at doing? Tell us about it.
  • Q: If you could be the best at anything what would it be? (Share your dream as well)
  • Did you know that God wants you to Glorify Him in whatever you do?
  • So, what do you think it means to Glorify God in what you do? (no right answer, just see what kids say)
  • Glorifying God means including God in whatever you choose to do.
  • You can include God, in whatever you do, in many ways:
    • By praying to God before or after you do something
    • By telling others about Jesus while you are doing something
    • By asking God for help while you do something
    • By helping others while you do something
    • By being kind to others while you do something
    • By thinking about God while you do something
    • By listening for God’s direction while you are doing something
    • By being joyful and thankful while you do something
  • You see? There are as many ways to include God as there are things to do. It’s up to you.
  • Because as a Christian, that means we love God so much we include Him in everything.
  • God wants you to do your best. That also means trying hard, giving it your best effort.
  • We do not glorify God when we don’t give our best efforts.
  • The teaching verse reminds us we have choices. First, we choose what we spend our time on. For example, we choose a hobby or hobbies to do, whether good or bad.
  • And second, we choose whether to do it all for the glory of God, or not.
  • God says, your life will go well for you if you do choose wisely, and when you include God in those things you do, He is pleased. We should always want to please Him. He is a loving Father.

Memory Verse #3

  • Ask if anybody knows it yet and can say it? Read it together 2X. Consider having a memory verse pamphlet for kids take home.
  • Note: we are moving to verse #3.

Proverbs 30:5 Every word of God proves true; He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him.

Topical Questions

  1. Do you ever recall seeing a professional athlete glorifying God on TV? Some point toward the heaven or pray.

  2. Ask the boys how they might glorify God in the things they do, next time?

  3. What is the importance of hobbies as an example to others?
We are connecting hobbies with glorifying God because we need to be “Salt & Light” to others.

Closing Prayer

Father God, thank You for being such a wonderful God. You give us so many fun things to do in this life, like hobbies. Please give us the strength to glorify You in all that we do and to find creative ways to include You in those things. For we love you, Lord. In your son, Jesus Christ’s name, we pray. Amen!
