Elective 3: Hobbies Elective

Devotional – Doing Your Best

Opening

  • Hobbies are fun, now let’s see what the bible says about the best way to have fun.
  • Read, or someone read the Teaching verse. FYI: The memory verse is further down

1 Corinthians 10:31 So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.

Devotional

Big picture God gives us talents, time, and resources. We should use them to the best of our ability to glorify Him.

  • Q: In your family, is there something that you are the very best at doing? Tell us about it.
  • Q: If you could be the best at anything what would it be? (Share your dream as well)
  • In our last meeting, we talked about that God wants you to Glorify Him in whatever you do.
  • Today, we want you to learn: God gives each of us talents, time, and resources. You should use your talents, time, and resources to the best of your ability to glorify God.
  • God gave you unique talent. To say you have no talent is false. You just must find where your talents lie. Try different hobbies to discover where you may have hidden talent. You may surprise yourself!
  • God gave each of us lots of time. You should use your time wisely and not waste it on sinful living.
  • Remember from last meeting we said using your time seeking sin would leave you empty while time spent seeking God would fill you up with peace and enjoyment.
  • And, God gave you resources to use to glorify Him. Your resources mean your brain power, your friends and family, your strength, your passion, and even your $.
  • Q: Can you think of some ways to use your resources for God? (loving others, using your creativity, etc)
  • All three: your time, talent and resources, you should use to the best of your ability to glorify God.
  • When you glorify God with all three things, you will really be blessed. The heroes of the bible all did just that. They used their time, talent and resources in the service of God.
  • God wants you to do your best. That also means trying hard, giving it your best effort.
  • We do not glorify God when we don’t give our best efforts.
  • The teaching verse reminds us we have choices. First, we choose what we spend our time on. For example, we choose a hobby or hobbies to do, whether good or bad.
  • And second, we choose whether to do it all for the glory of God, or not.
  • God says, your life will go well for you if you do choose wisely, and when you include God in those things you do, He is pleased. We should always want to please Him. He is a loving Father.

Memory Verse #3

Ask if anybody knows it yet and can say it? Read it together 2X. Consider having a memory verse pamphlet for kids take home.
Note: we are moving to verse #3.

Matthew 22:37-39 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

Topical Questions

  1. Do you ever recall seeing a professional athlete glorifying God on TV? Some point toward the heaven or kneel and pray.

  2. Ask the boys how they might glorify God in the things they do, next time?

  3. What is the importance of hobbies as an example to others?
We are connecting hobbies with glorifying God because we need to be “Salt & Light” to others.

Closing Prayer

Father God, thank You for being such a wonderful God. You give us so many fun things to do in this life, like hobbies. Please give us the strength to glorify You in all that we do and to find creative ways to include You in those things. For we love you, Lord. In your son, Jesus Christ’s name, we pray. Amen!
