Elective 5: Gusto!

Devotional – Gusto!

Opening

  • Let’s see what the Bible says about how we should live or work or play, including taking up a hobby.
  • Read, or someone read the Teaching verse. FYI: The memory verse is further down

Ecclesiastes 9:10 Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might.

Devotional

Big picture God gives us but one life to live. So choose to passionately follow His son, Jesus, now.

  • Q: How many lives does God give you to live? (The Bible says, just one).
  • Q: Does anyone know how long they will live? Some people live a short time, some live longer.
  • Because we only have one life, and life is short, (some very short) the teaching verse is making a point that HOW we live our life, is just as important as WHAT we choose to do with our life.
  • In this Hobbies branch, we’ve been discussing WHAT makes life enjoyable, like hobbies and other interests. We’ve encouraged you to take up a hobby or other interest, that gives you joy.
  • But, now, we are discussing with you older boys a deeper topic than just WHAT to do with your life. We are discussing now HOW you should go about living your life.
  • Q: Based on the teaching verse, HOW does God say you should live? (With all your might.)
  • Q: So, what does living with all your might look like? (give example from your life)
  • Living with all your might is described in the Bible as: living with all your heart, with all your soul, and all your strength. Mind, Body, Spirit. Using everything God has given you.
  • Many people use the word passion, or passionately, to describe someone giving their all. When we are passionate, we are totally committed to whatever we are doing. Totally sold out in our mind, body and spirit.
  • Jesus was passionate about His mission. So, was the apostle Paul. They gave everything they had for God.
  • So, let’s apply this to you. What are you passionate about?
  • Think about it. You only have one life to live. And life is short. There is a time limit when God will slam the door shut on your life. We will all die. Then there are no more chances to believe in Jesus.
  • Now, Jesus stands at the door of your life, knocking, waiting for you let Him into your heart.
  • Even more so than hobbies and interests, Jesus is the WHAT that brings us joy in life.
  • So, choose to passionately follow Jesus, while there is still time. Jesus is the WHAT. Passionately, with all your might, is the HOW.

Memory Verse #3

Ask if anybody knows it yet and can say it? Read it together 2X Consider having a memory verse pamphlet for kids take home.

Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

Topical Questions

  1. What does Jesus say is the greatest commandment? (See Mt 22:37: Love the Lord God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind). How does this relate to today’s topic?

  2. Proverbs 3:5-6 tells us to trust God with all our heart, mind and spirit. How does this relate to today's topic?

  3. Can an unbeliever get into heaven after they die? Why, or why not?

Closing Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, You have numbered our days and given us but one life to live. Give us a heart of wisdom to realize our time is short. Help us to passionately follow Jesus with the time You have given us. Give us strength to live life with all our might. In Your son’s name, Jesus Christ, we pray these requests. Amen!
