Elective 12: Repairs

Devotional - Repairs

Opening

  • Repairing is to fix a broken or worn out item so that it can continue to be of use, let’s see what we can learn from a time the Bible talks about a repair.

  • Read, or someone read the teaching verse. FYI: The memory verse is further down.

1 Kings 18:30 And Elijah said unto all the people, Come near unto me. And all the people came near unto him. And he repaired the altar of the LORD that was broken down.

Devotional

Big picture When God‘s altar was broken Elijah repaired it for God’s glory. Repairing demonstrates stewartship and honors God.

  • God’s altar had been left to ruin and needed repair. We have many objects that need repair when used often, or when we do not maintain them.
  • Let's think about what Elijah could have done. He also could have built a new altar or sacrificed on a broken altar.
    • Building a new altar would have been wasteful, and God still had a purpose for the broken altar
    • Using the altar broken when it could be repaired would not have been offering God the best one could.
  • Shortly afterwards, God used this altar in an awesome display of power, sending fire down from heaven. The sacrifice, water, and altar were all consumed.
  • How can we use our repair skills to please God?
    • God wants us to repair our possessions. We can be good stewards of creation by repairing God’s creations and not disposing of them in the trash.
    • Repairing your possessions keeps them out of the trash, saves your parents from replacing it, and allows you or your parents to purchase other needs or wants.
  • Q: What good thing could you do for others with the money you save by repairing instead of replacing an object?
  • Q: What can you repair that honors God? What can you repair that will honors your parents, siblings, friends?
  • God has given man all the tools he needs to repair anything, but mankind must believe in the one true God to obtain those skills. You and your parents will gain great satisfaction upon you taking something that is not working and make it work again.
  • In Isaiah 58:12, Isaiah prophesies about rebuilding ancient ruins. Isaiah refers both to literal rebuilding of Jerusalem and rebuilding the nation of Israel from the sins that led to the exile.
  • Even after many generations of neglect, walls can be repaired and cities can be rebuilt with trust in the Lord.
  • Just like you can repair objects, you can repair relationships. God wants you to repent of mistakes. Seek and give forgiveness.
  • You can also seek and receive forgiveness from God for mistakes of the past. You can repair your relationship with Him.

Memory Verse #1

Ask if anybody knows it yet and can say it? Read it together 2X. Consider having a memory verse pamphlet for kids to take home.

Ephesians 6:13 Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm.

Topical questions

  1. We started by talking about repairing God’s Altar. How does this lesson from repairs apply to life?

  2. How does our lesson about repairing apply to our relationship with God?

  3. When is a time that you repaired something that had a benefit to someone else?

  4. How can keeping things in good repair bring glory to God?

Closing prayer

Dear Lord, we thank you for teaching us the value of repairing things and making them better. We pray for wisdom and understanding for the boys today that they would repair things in your honor and think about the things we talked about today. Show them how they can also repair relationships by following in your example. In your name, Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen!
