Core 1: Ropes/Knots

Devotional – Wisdom

Opening

  • Today we learned how WISE it is to know your ropes & knots because they are very useful tools.
  • Now let’s see what the bible says about being wise.
  • Read, or someone read Teaching verse. FYI: The memory verse is further down

Proverbs 6:20-21 My son, keep your father’s command and do not forsake your mother’s teaching. Bind them always on your heart; fasten them around your neck.

Devotional

Big picture We cannot physically keep wisdom in our hearts. We might not physically carry wise words around our necks. But we can live in a wise manner.

  • Q: So, is the teaching verse commanding you to actually use rope and tie your parents’ wise words around your neck and heart? No! It’s a metaphor, a word picture to help us understand the point.
  • The point is: We can live in a wise manner if we listen to our parents.
  • Loving wisdom means doing what is right, staying out of trouble, and not hurting ourselves, or hurting others, or hurting nature (God’s creation).
  • To do that, you need wise help! Where do you go for wise help?
  • Did you know…Your parents are God’s wisdom teachers to you?
  • That’s God’s plan. The Bible verse says so!
  • But…parents cannot teach you wisdom without you being teachable: Listening. Remembering. Obeying.
  • And, the teaching verse talks about Binding & Fastening wisdom in our hearts. Binding & Fastening…. Hey, that’s just like tying knots, what we just learned!
  • Joke: See how we tied together being wise and learning your knots? HaHa! Seriously, I guess that means learning about ropes and knots is a wise thing?!
  • Actually, knowing WHEN/WHERE to use a knot, and then HOW CORRECTLY to tie knot is wisdom in Action! Because:
    • Knots can save your life or others
    • Knots can save your property (tarp rip, boat float away)
    • Knots can save you time (hard to undo bad not)
    • Knots can keep you from looking foolish (tent fall down)
    • Knots are VERY USEFUL tools (securing and building things)
  • A knot well bound is going to stay tied. Wisdom well bound in your heart is going to stay with you.
  • If you use a weak knot, you might lose your things. If you don't bind wisdom, you might soon forget it.
  • How? Pay close attention, repeat, practice, and share wisdom--just like learning a knot.

Memory Verse #1

Ask if anybody knows it yet and can say it? Read it together 2X. Consider having a memory verse pamphlet for kids take home.

Ephesians 6:13 Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm.

Topical Questions

  1. Why is listening & obeying my parents the wise choice?

  2. Is learning your knots wise? Why?

  3. Give some examples of living in a wise manner?

  4. How can you best bind the wisdom you take to heart?

Closing Prayer

Encourage them to remember to always make the wise choice. To listen & obey to their parents so it will go well with them.
