Core 1: Ropes/Knots

Devotional – Wisdom

Opening

  • Today we learned how WISE it is to know your ropes & knots because they are very useful tools.
  • Now let’s see what the bible says about being wise.
  • Read, or someone read Teaching verse. FYI: The memory verse is further down

Proverbs 6-20 & 21 My son, keep your father’s command and do not forsake your mother’s teaching. Bind them always on your heart; fasten them around your neck.

Devotional

Big picture God desires for you to listen to the wisdom of your parents.

  • Q: Have you ever lost something valuable? Would you have lost it if it had been tied to you?
  • Cowboys used to use ropes and knots to secure their valuable things so they wouldn’t lose them. They would tie their guns and packs to their saddles. And tie their horses to hitching posts.
  • Our teaching verse is saying your parents’ wisdom is valuable, kind of like a horse and gun is to a cowboy.
  • That your parents’ wisdom is so important to you, that you need to do whatever it takes to not lose their wisdom, to keep it close to your heart and mind, so you never forget it.
  • “Binding and Fastening” your parents’ wisdom is like those cowboy knots, tying-up what’s important.
  • And, listening to wisdom means doing what is right, staying out of trouble, and not hurting ourselves, or hurting others, or hurting nature (God’s creation).
  • But we all need to be taught how to be wise! So, where do you go for wise help?
  • Q: Did you know…Your parents are God’s wisdom teachers to you?
  • That’s God’s plan. The Bible verse says so!
  • But parents cannot teach you wisdom without you being teachable: being willing to Listen, willing to Remember, and wanting to Obey. Otherwise, you are like a cowboy who lost his horse and gun because he didn’t know his knots! A sad situation.
    • So, just like cowboy, you knowing about ropes & knots is important:
    • They can save your life or others
    • They can save your property (tarp rip, boat float away)
    • They can save you time (hard to undo bad knot)
    • They can keep you from looking foolish (tent fall down)
    • They are VERY USEFUL tools (securing and building things)
  • And, remember: God desires you to listen to the wisdom of your parents, and to bind that wisdom, and fasten it to your heart and mind like a good, solid knot.

Memory Verse #1

Ask if anybody knows it yet and can say it? Read it together 2X Consider having a memory verse pamphlet for kids take home.

John 14:6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

Topical Questions

  1. Why is listening & obeying your parents the wise choice?

  2. Is learning your knots wise? Why?

  3. Why does God want you to listen to the wisdom of your parents?

  4. What wisdom have you learned from your Mom or Dad?

Closing Prayer

Encourage them to always make the wise choice. To listen & obey their parents so it will go well with them. That God wants them to listen to their wise parents who God has put them teachers over you
