Core 2: Science in Weather

Devotional #23 – Weather

Opening

  • We learned a lot today about the science of weather, now let’s see what God has to say about weather.
  • Read, or someone read the Teaching verse. FYI: The memory verse is further down

Leviticus 26:3&4 If you follow my decrees, and are careful to obey my commands, I will send you rain in its season, and the ground will yield its crops and the trees of the field their fruit.

Devotional

Big picture God provides for us because he loves us.

  • Q: Have you ever thought what would happen to the earth without any rain?
  • We know what happened in Noah of the Bible, when God sent too much rain? God destroyed all life. But what do you think would happen if God never sent any rain or snow?
  • Well, thankfully that doesn’t happen, because God provides for us because he loves us.
  • He brings just the right amount of rain so that things grow, so the earth runs smoothly, and we get food, but not too much rain so everything dies. Just the right amounts of rain, sun, wind, etc.
  • You see, God is not far away from earth, sitting in heaven, wondering what is happening here.
  • God is very involved and cares a lot how His creation, the earth, is operating.
  • He makes weather happen so that the whole earth runs smoothly.
  • Everything on the earth and in the heavens is under God’s control.
  • Some people think science is God. But that is not true. Science is not God. It’s a sin to think that.
  • God gave us science to understand some of how His creation works. We don’t understand everything and never will because we are not God. But, God in His kindness allows us to understand some things.
  • Like for example, weather forecasting. Weather forecasting helps farmers know when to plant crops, or when to warn people to protect themselves from bad weather, or as simple as when to bring a raincoat.
  • As we discussed today, God has given us many ways to understand the weather (red sky, etc).
  • He loves us so much that He gives us understanding and provides for us.
  • And God is not a God of confusion. He wants us to know Him and understand His creation.
  • If He were far away and didn’t care about us, we wouldn’t be able to talk with Him in prayer.
  • Q: Can you name any Bible stories about rain or drought?
Joseph and the 7 years of famine, Pharaoh and the plagues, Noah and the flood, Elijah and the 3.5yrs of drought
  • God knows the weather. He provides all we need because He loves us so much!

Memory Verse #3

Ask if anybody knows it yet and can say it? Read it together 2X. Consider having a memory verse pamphlet for kids take home.

John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him.

Topical Questions

  1. In Genesis, God created the earth and everything in it. Is it any wonder that God knows the weather?

  2. If we know so much about the weather, why are weather forecasts often wrong?

  3. Think about how perfect the earth is. Not too hot, not too cold, not too stormy. Are you thankful?

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, O most high, how majestic is Your name in all the earth! When we consider the heavens, the work of Your fingers we stand in awe. For You made the heavens and the earth. Yet, You do not stand far off and hide Yourself from us. Thank You for loving us so much that You provide a wonderful world for us to live in. In Your Son Jesus Christ’s name, we give You praise. Amen!
