Elective 8: Obedience

Devotional – Listening

Opening

  • Today, we learned about Obedience, now let’s see what the Bible says about that godly value.
  • Read, or someone read the Teaching verse. FYI: The memory verse is further down

Proverbs 4:10 Listen, my son, accept what I say, and the years of your life will be many.

Devotional

Big picture Listen and Learn God’s Words. They will bring you life.

  • Q: Who here is a good listener? Tell us why you think you are a good listener? (if no one/give example)
  • Q: Can you obey someone if you didn’t hear what they told you to obey? (No, not really)
  • Q: Who is the son, God is speaking to in Proverbs 4:10, the teaching verse? (Not Jesus, but all of us).
  • God calls each one of you boys, His son, if you believe in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior.
  • So, back to the verse. God, Our Heavenly Father, is commanding each of us sons to listen to His words.
  • There are 3 important parts to this verse. Q: Does anyone remember the first part? It says we must listen, and not just listen but we must pay close attention, or you might miss what God is saying to you.
  • Paying attention and listening means you stop whatever else you are doing (No Multi-tasking!) and actively engage your eyes, yours ears and your brain to the speaker and what He/She is saying.
  • Q: After listening, what did God say the second thing we need do is? (Accept what He says)
  • After listening we then must accept what He says (His words) as being true.
  • You will hear lots of things during your life. You may even be paying very close attention to what is being said, BUT if you do not accept what someone says, you will never obey it, you will just ignore it.
  • Plenty of people hear from God or read His words in the Bible but they never accept what He says. They just go on doing what they want to do, ignoring the truth, even truth from God!
  • The third and last part of the verse is a promise from God to you His sons. A really nice promise!
  • The promise is: IF you LISTEN and ACCEPT His words, THEN you will live long and prosper!
  • Seems pretty simple and easy doesn’t it? You listen and accept God’s words as truth, and then He will bring you long life. There is no catch. God is good and honorable. He does not lie or play tricks on us. He will do exactly as He says. He is trustworthy and true.
  • So, remember! Listen to God’s words. Accept them as completely true. You’ll be glad you did!

Memory Verse #3

Ask if anybody knows it yet and can say it? Read it together 2X Consider having a memory verse pamphlet for kids take home.

2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.

Topical Questions

  1. Why don’t we listen well?
Too distracted, too busy, other things more important

  2. Has anyone ever read the Book of Proverbs before? It is full of godly wisdom for young boys!

  3. God said if we listen to Him, His words will bring us life. How can His words bring us life?

Closing Prayer

Dear Father God, we thank You for the opportunity to be your son simply by believing in Your eternal son Jesus. What an amazing gift. And, thank you for speaking to us through Your word the Bible. Help us to pay attention to those in authority over us and to listen to them, but especially help us to listen to You, Lord. Open our heart, mind and ears to what You have to say to us. We accept Your words as true, Lord. Make the years of our life many! In Jesus' name we pray. Amen!
