Core 2: Our Faith

Devotional - Faith

Opening

  • Today we learned what our faith is all about and what moral values are.
  • Here is a Bible story about 2 people you probably know well: one with great faith in God and the other person not so much.
  • Read, or someone read the Teaching verse. FYI: The memory verse is further down

1 Samuel 17:45-47:

Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46 This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down and cut off your head. And I will give the dead bodies of the host of the Philistines this day to the birds of the air and to the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel, 47 and that all this assembly may know that the Lord saves not with sword and spear. For the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give you into our hand.”

Devotional

Big picture How do we grow our faith and share our faith with others?

  • No doubt David had great faith. But what about you? How much faith do you have?
  • If you knew God’s plan for you was going to be as scary as battling Goliath, would you do it?
  • Do you think you can be like David? God does. That is why He made you.
  • The Bible says you are “fearfully and wonderfully made” by God. Do you truly believe that?
  • God made you for a reason. He has a special plan for your life, only you can do. To glorify Him.
  • Did you know one of the best ways to glorify God is to share your faith with others?
    • Yes, sharing your faith can be scary. But, is it any scarier than Goliath?
  • How can you share your faith?
    • The best people to share your faith with are those right in front of you (family, friends, neighbors, classmates). Just tell your story why you love Jesus.
    • Think about who is right in front of you that needs to hear the about your faith in Jesus and the Gospel.
    • Better yet, write down the names of people, even if it is just one person, who you will commit to share.
  • 1 Corinthians 10:30: “So…whatever you do, do it all to the glory of God.”
    • That is not a suggestion, that is a command.
  • Sharing your faith is the best way to grow your faith. God will bless you when you glorify Him! God in His perfect grace and mercy has a wonderful plan: You glorify Him, He blesses you!
  • I don’t know about you, but I want to grow in my faith and to be blessed!!!!!
  • Another way to grow and show your faith is to forgive. Forgiveness. For we have been forgiven.
  • The Bible says not forgiving “rots the bones”. Unforgiveness is like a cancer inside you. Truly!
  • God’s morality and moral law (values) are absolute and unchanging as they reflect God.
  • Now let’s read the memory verse, which sums up all that we have been talking about.

Memory Verse #3

Ask if anybody knows it yet and can say it? Read it together 2X Consider having a memory verse pamphlet for kids take home.
Note: we are moving to verse #3.

Matthew 22:37-39 “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

Topical Questions

  1. How does the first part of the memory verse (Matt 22) relate to doing your job of glorifying God?

  2. How does the second part of the verse relate to sharing your faith with your “neighbor”?

  3. Why is forgiving others like loving your neighbor as yourself?

  4. Jesus said loving God and loving others were the 2 greatest commandments. Explain why?

Closing Prayer

Dear Lord, you are an amazing and wonderful God! The God who is real. The God who saves us! You are full of grace and mercy. Help us, Lord to have great faith just like David. Give us courage to do mighty and wonderous jobs for You, God! For You are all powerful, all knowing, everywhere, and yet You love us. In Christ’s name we pray, Ame
