Core 3: Godly Citizenship

Devotional – Stewardship

Opening

  • Today, we learned what it means to be a godly citizen, now let’s see what the Bible says about that.
  • Read, or someone read the Teaching verse. FYI: The memory verse is further down

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work: If one falls down, his friend can help him up but pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up!

Devotional

Big picture We can steward people by serving those around us.

  • Q: Does anyone know what the word stewardship means?
Stewardship means taking care of someone else or caring for their things.
  • Today we want to talk about being a good steward of people and how we should take care of others.
  • Really, what that means is serving others. By serving others we don’t just mean helping others in emergencies or when they are old. We mean serving all people we meet, every ordinary day.
  • We don’t have to go find people to serve. God puts people into our lives for us to serve, to steward. Serving those people right in front of us is a great way to display Godly Citizenship.
  • God blesses us by putting people into our lives that we can help. It makes us better Christians and makes the world a better place for everyone.
  • God made all people (believers and non-believers). We are protecting God’s creation by serving people.
  • The teaching verse says two people helping each other are made stronger together.
  • We should be practicing our good works by helping others in need.
  • We all can help others. It doesn't have to be big help. It can be the small things like picking up trash or even your room.
  • Think about the people God has put right in front of you. Who are they? Your friends, family and neighbors, on your sports teams or clubs, even Trail Life people.
  • I bet you can think of a few people right in front of you that may need help, even little help.
  • Even if nothing comes to mind right now, just keeping your eyes and ears open to helpful opportunities is being a good steward of others. If you stay aware of serving opportunities, God will present those service opportunities to you. God wants you to serve. It is very important to grow as a person to serve.
  • And remember, the teaching verse says we all should be pitied if no one is there to help us.

Memory Verse #2

Ask if anybody knows it yet and can say it? Read it together 2X Consider having a memory verse pamphlet for kids take home.

Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

Topical Questions

Serving others is not easy, but the memory verse says if we Trust in God, he will help us do hard things.

  1. God puts people into our lives so we can serve them and they to serve us. Is that a new concept to you?

  2. Why is stewardship hard to do?
Because we are selfish by nature, that’s why we need to lean on God

  3. What is a time that someone was a steward to you?

Closing Prayer

Dear Father God, we are so thankful that You have shown us how to live, how to be Godly citizens! We ask that You help us to put others first, as Jesus did. Help these boys to be good stewards of people. Help them to see those in need right in front of them. We want to be a blessing to You, our families, and our community! We pray these requests in Your name, Jesus Christ. Amen!
